It was written for melodica (and for <a href=\"http:\/\/cookylamoo.com\/boringlikeadrill\/2009\/09\/melodica.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Melodica!<\/span><\/a>), but this recording uses an accordion soundfont because I couldn\u2019t get a decent-sounding melodica soundfont for free anywhere on the internet, not even illegally.  These particular accordion samples sound closer to a melodica than an accordion, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The series of works collectively titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookylamoo.com\/music\/redundens.shtml\"><em><strong>Redundens<\/strong><\/em><\/a>   was begun in 2001. All the pieces take Arnold Schoenberg\u2019s  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schoenberg.at\/6_archiv\/music\/works\/op\/compositions_op11_notes_e.htm\">Three  Pieces for Piano, Op.11<\/a> as their starting point: only the top line in Schoenberg&#8217;s pieces is retained as an unaccompanied melody (or as a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pitch_class\">pitch classes<\/a> if you\u2019re more technically-minded.) Each set of pieces uses a different method of encoding this melody; by pitch, register, timbre, duration, dynamics, or other means.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Redundens 1m<\/em><\/strong> keeps the same register and duration for each pitch class throughout                the piece, determined by the nature of their initial appearances                in the original. The range of the original has been compressed to suit a solo melodica with a range of two-and-a-half octaves.
