All the pieces take Arnold Schoenberg\u2019s                <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schoenberg.at\/6_archiv\/music\/works\/op\/compositions_op11_notes_e.htm\">Three                Pieces for Piano, Op.11<\/a> as their starting point: only the top line in Schoenberg&#8217;s pieces is retained as an unaccompanied melody (or as a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pitch_class\">pitch classes<\/a> if you\u2019re more technically-minded.)
