{"id":760,"date":"2008-09-26T06:59:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-26T06:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cookylamoo.com\/wordpress\/?p=760"},"modified":"2010-01-09T16:40:51","modified_gmt":"2010-01-09T16:40:51","slug":"this-is-starting-to-get-depressing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cookylamoo.com\/boringlikeadrill\/2008\/09\/this-is-starting-to-get-depressing.html","title":{"rendered":"This is starting to get depressing."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s one thing when you realise that most of the generation of great composers born in the 1920s have now died &#8211; Xenakis, Ligeti, Berio, Stockhausen, <a href=\"http:\/\/cookylamoo.com\/boringlikeadrill\/2008\/09\/mauricio-kagel.html\">Kagel<\/a>, etc &#8211; but now <a href=\"http:\/\/johnsonsrambler.wordpress.com\/\">The Rambler<\/a> is reporting that <a href=\"http:\/\/mywebpage.netscape.com\/_ht_a\/uytarokh\/hrmain.htm\">Hora\u0163iu R\u0103dulescu<\/a> (b. 1942) <a href=\"http:\/\/johnsonsrambler.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/26\/horatiu-radulescu\/\">has died<\/a>.  No other reports yet, and Wikipedia is dithering on whether or not to put it on their &#8216;live&#8217; page.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">ANABlog has recently been posting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.analogartsensemble.net\/labels\/Horatiu%20Radulescu.html\">a bunch of mp3s<\/a>, with notes, of R\u0103dulescu&#8217;s music &#8211; simultaneously sensual and austere, using a rich and distinctive palette of microtones, embracing the complete &#8220;acoustic spectrum&#8221;.  If the ANABlog links are down, there are more compositions easily found on the Avant Garde Project site (large FLAC files and sleeve notes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avantgardeproject.org\/archive.htm\">here<\/a>, mp3 versions <a href=\"http:\/\/avantgardeproject.conus.info\/\">backed up here<\/a>). <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also, Paris Transatlantic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paristransatlantic.com\/magazine\/interviews\/radulescu.html\">interviewed R\u0103dulescu<\/a> last year.  It begins promisingly:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He can&#8217;t stand Shostakovitch (\u201cde la merde!\u201d), dismisses Schnittke (\u201ctuttifrutti!\u201d), cordially dislikes Boulez (but admits that \u201che opened up a new sound world for all of us and his management skills come out well in front of the orchestra\u201d), listens to Algerian rai, and Nashville blues while he accelerates in the BMW, and unwinds to Monteverdi and Josquin des Prez when he de-accellerates at home. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">His own music is unclassifiable. Though frequently called spectral, it has diverged totally from the French academic spectralism which is so hot in institutional circles in Paris these days. Colleagues of his who have become well-known such as Dusapin (the tritones of whose cello concerto \u201cset my teeth on edge\u201d) annoy him through their business skills, and he refers to the music spectrale crowd in Paris with scorn (\u201cthey&#8217;re the mafiosi\u201d).
