Instead, I made this.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/gSAZCA0Zg5o?rel=0\" width=\"470\" height=\"264\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dick Without A Hole<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hello, Yes, Hello&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<em>Brion Gysin<\/em><br \/>\n&#8220;Did Dick?&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<em>Graham Kennedy<\/em><br \/>\n&#8220;Dick Did!&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<em>Ugly Dave Gray<\/em><br \/>\n&#8220;Why are people ringing telling me jokes?&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<em>Bob Byrne<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bob the late-night talkback radio host is taking your calls on the open line about the issues of the day that matter to you, and our next caller is Gene. Gene wants to ask Bob a riddle. Bob doesn&#8217;t get it. Moving right along: Peter is next on the line. Peter also wants to ask Bob a riddle. Bob doesn&#8217;t know the answer, but Peter won&#8217;t tell him! Perplexed, Bob takes Phyllis&#8217; call and asks her Peter&#8217;s riddle, but Phyllis just wants to hear Gene&#8217;s riddle again&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dick Without A Hole<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was inspired by my love for the genteel stupidity of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cruise_1323\">talk radio in Adelaide<\/a> last century. The hosts craved the urgency and confrontation of shock jocks in other parts of the world but everyone in Adelaide, announcers and callers alike, were just too\u00a0<em>nice<\/em>\u00a0to carry it off. I still have a few cassettes, somewhere, of some of the better sessions, particularly the 9pm to midnight shift when the demographic got drunk and doddery.<\/p>\n<p>This playful little dance of fumbled verbal exchanges and missed punchlines comes from one of those surviving tapes. Set to a cheerful, semi-funky shuffle, our four protagonists juggle the two dud gags back and forth, never grasping them yet never quite letting them drop. I find that their shared confusion in joke-telling gives a satisfying sense of mystery to this simple yet intractable form of social interaction. Their ritual is consecrated by the hallowed incantation of Messrs Kennedy and Gray, the two Magi of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/147564\/graham-kennedys-blankety-blanks\">mid-seventies Australian comedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dick Without A Hole (Red Detachment Of Women Mix)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0made its public debut at John Beagles&#8217; and Graham Ramsay&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaglesramsay.co.uk\/cultural\/magogopage1.htm\"><em>Museum Magogo<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in Glasgow, 1999. After that it toured to PB Gallery in Melbourne, and was revived in 2002 for the\u00a0<a  href=\"http:\/\/www.physicsroom.org.nz\/gallery\/series\/piped\/\">Piped Music<\/a>\u00a0series at\u00a0<a  href=\"http:\/\/www.physicsroom.org.nz\/\">The Physics Room<\/a>\u00a0in Christchurch &#8211; more specifically, in the toilets of The Physics Room.<\/p>\n<p>For Christmas 2015 I&#8217;ve made a video version with a new, improved <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gSAZCA0Zg5o\">Spear &#038; Jackson No. 3 Mix<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Now with the ipad\/smartphone\/gaming console of your choice, you too can enjoy\u00a0<em><strong>Dick Without A Hole<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in the comfort of your own toilet.
