I wanted to find out more about <a href=\"http:\/\/cookylamoo.com\/boringlikeadrill\/2007\/05\/we-connect-john-cage-with-james-bond.html\">John Cage and <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">Ern\u0151<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">Goldfinger<\/span><\/a>, but couldn&#8217;t find a copy of Nigel <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">Warburton&#8217;s<\/span> biography of <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">Goldfinger<\/span> anywhere else.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">Warburton<\/span> takes time to mention Cage&#8217;s brief association with the architect, but has nothing more to add than what Cage has already written about the experience, other than the intriguing detail that <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">Goldfinger<\/span> made his remark about the need for an architects to devote their lives solely to architecture while &#8220;preaching to some girlfriends&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">There&#8217;s nothing about why Cage&#8217;s former professor chose <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\">Goldfinger<\/span> as the man to mentor Cage, but it can be inferred from the rest of the chapter.  <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\">Goldfinger<\/span> had quickly established a reputation as something of an <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\">enfant<\/span> terrible<\/span> since arriving in Paris, making a lot of noise and getting himself introduced to the best and brightest in town.  Except for Picasso: <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_9\">Goldfinger<\/span> refused to meet an artist he suspected would not treat him as an equal.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In fact, the younger <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_10\">Goldfinger<\/span> could easily be a character out of a <a href=\"http:\/\/cookylamoo.com\/boringlikeadrill\/2006\/11\/another-london-pilgrimage-wyndham.html\">Wyndham Lewis<\/a> novel, judging from <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_11\">Warburton&#8217;s<\/span> book.  As well as the harem kept in his offices, &#8220;<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_12\">Ern\u0151&#8217;s<\/span> wild spirits even resulted in a challenge to a duel. The source of the insult was his shimmying at a nightclub.&#8221;  The duel (with sabres) was averted after both parties had their lawyers prepare and exchange &#8220;elaborate official apologies&#8221;.  On another occasion he had &#8220;gone on the rampage after one <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_13\">Bal<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_14\">des<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_15\">Quat&#8217;z<\/span> Arts, where there was open hostility between the ateliers, storming off into the night intent on beating up homosexuals.&#8221;  Just as well Cage didn&#8217;t stay around for long.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now I know how the Fonz feels, because I got me a library card; specifically, a reader&#8217;s pass to the British Library.
