Back when I was first trying to find out more about Schwitters, every book (yes, pre-internet) I read mentioned that Schwitters never made a complete recording of his major sound poem.  Then one day I find a CD in the shops of Schwitters reciting the piece.  All of it.  How did this happen?  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubu.com\/sound\/schwitters.html\">It went a little something like this<\/a>&#8230;.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Cologne, 1987<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jackox.net\/index.html\">Jack Ox<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">:<\/span> Gee, wouldn&#8217;t it be great if we could hear how Schwitters performed his <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Ursonate<\/span>?<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SIfumZa2TKY\">Michael Waisvisz<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">:<\/span> Oh, you can borrow my copy.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ox:<\/span> No, I mean a performance by Schwitters himself.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Waisvisz:<\/span> Yeah, I taped a copy of it from some guy at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steim.org\/steim\/\">STEIM<\/a> back in the 60s. It was a dub of some shellac discs Schwitters had recorded.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ox:<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">!!!!!<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Waisvisz:<\/span> What, is it rare or something?<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">UbuWeb has a page of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubu.com\/sound\/schwitters.html\">different versions of the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Ursonate<\/span><\/a>, including the Schwitters recording, and the 1986 recording by Jaap Blonk that Ernst Schwitters <a href=\"http:\/\/home.swipnet.se\/sonoloco6\/SoundPoetry\/soundpoetry.html\">doesn&#8217;t want you to hear<\/a>!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also, just because I found them while (ahem) researching this post, here are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thereminworld.com\/leonphotos.asp\">some ridiculously cool photos of Leon Theremin<\/a> jamming with Michael Waisvisz.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The story of the lost Morton Feldman recording, hidden in plain sight with a name tag and everything, reminded me of Kurt Schwitters&#8217; recording of his Ursonate.
