{"id":500,"date":"2007-06-06T17:06:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-06T17:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cookylamoo.com\/wordpress\/?p=500"},"modified":"2010-01-02T23:25:59","modified_gmt":"2010-01-02T23:25:59","slug":"lost-feldman-piece-recovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cookylamoo.com\/boringlikeadrill\/2007\/06\/lost-feldman-piece-recovered.html","title":{"rendered":"Lost Feldman piece recovered!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are artworks that are lost, and then there are artworks that are stolen from the backs of cars: such was the fate of the master tapes for Robert Ashley&#8217;s <span style=\"color:black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubu.com\/historical\/wolgamot\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">In Sara, Mencken, Christ and Beethoven  There Were Men and Women<\/span><\/a> before the proper mixdown could be made. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perhaps more notoriously, because no trace of its existence remained, was <a href=\"http:\/\/cookylamoo.com\/boringlikeadrill\/2006\/12\/so-wrong-its-right-morton-feldman.html\">Morton Feldman&#8217;s<\/a> composition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnvill.demon.co.uk\/mfwolff2.htm#wolff4\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Possibility of a New Work for Electric Guitar<\/span><\/a>, the manuscript of which was stolen from colleague Christian Wolff&#8217;s car in 1966 (it was kept inside his guitar case, which was lifted along with the instrument).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color:black;\">I subscribe to the Morton Feldman mailing list <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.topica.com\/lists\/why.patterns\/read\">Why Patterns?<\/a> (doesn&#8217;t everyone?), so in my inbox today came the news that after going missing for 41 years, a recording of the piece has been found.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color:black;\">The piece had only been played three times, once at a radio station. Feldman scholar Chris Villars and <\/span>Steve Dickison of San Francisco State University did some inspired guesswork as to what station that might be and got in touch with Charles Shere, a former Music Director at KPFA Berkeley from 1964-67.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<blockquote><p>Amazingly, Charles Shere recalled seeing a tape in the archive labelled with the title of Feldman&#8217;s piece, which he had thought was a piece by Christian Wolff. No-one had realised the importance of this tape as probably the only recording of a piece whose score was subsequently lost!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Soon after, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiom.org\/\">Other Minds<\/a> unearthed a tape of the complete concert, including the lost Feldman work.
