Homer&#8217;s book was not just <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">there<\/span>, as in London or Leyden; one decided to bring it along, or send for it, or decided not to.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">        &#8211; Hugh Kenner, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Pound Era<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">After discussing <a href=\"http:\/\/cookylamoo.com\/boringlikeadrill\/2007\/04\/not-wanted-on-voyage-more-perils-of.html\">what Australian authors didn&#8217;t make the trip to London<\/a>, I made a quick survey of the ones that did.  This seems to be just about everything:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obviously I like the more experimental poets: Ania Walwicz, Jas Duke, Chris Mann, \u03a0O, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.takver.com\/history\/925\/925_sum.htm\">several issues of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">925<\/span><\/a> are all present and correct.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some other small zines (see photo).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">A little history: Michael Cathcart&#8217;s abridgement of Manning Clark, Ann Coombs&#8217; <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Sex and Anarchy<\/span>, a history of the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.maths.unsw.edu.au\/%7Ejim\/push.html\">Sydney Push<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meaghan Morris&#8217; <a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.latrobe.edu.au\/AHR\/archive\/Issue-February-1998\/mead.html\">Ecstasy and Economics<\/a>, along with John Forbes&#8217; <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New and Selected Poems<\/span> and a &#8220;self-pirated&#8221; collection titled <a href=\"http:\/\/jacketmagazine.com\/03\/dgreview.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Humidity<\/span><\/a> (&#8220;I&#8217;ll probably change the title to <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Banquet of Cleopatra<\/span>.&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rainerlinz.net\/NMA\/22CAC\/TOC.html\">22 Contemporary Australian Composers<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rainerlinz.net\/rosenberg-archive\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Pink Violin<\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rainerlinz.net\/rosenberg-archive\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Violin Music in the Age of Shopping<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">More history: <a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/drinkingsongs.net\/mp3s\/1960s\/1960s-moonee-ponds-vol-1--barry-humphries-%28CD%29\/index.htm\">The Life and Death of Sandy Stone<\/a>, Bruce Petty&#8217;s <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Australia and how it works<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Noel Stock&#8217;s biography of Ezra Pound, written during his transition from being one of Pound &#8216;s defenders to one of his detractors.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fiction: <a href=\"http:\/\/patrickwhite.ozewriters.com\/\">Patrick White<\/a> (<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Voss<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Riders<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Vivisector<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Storm<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Leaves<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Twyborn<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Three Uneasy Pieces<\/span>), some Mary Fallon\/Fallin, a David Brooks (<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The House of Balthus<\/span>) I know nothing about but picked up for a dollar shotly before leaving, a slim volume of Henry Lawson (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikisource.org\/wiki\/The_Union_Buries_Its_Dead\">&#8220;The Union Buries Its Dead&#8221;<\/a> etc), and&#8230; where&#8217;s the rest of it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The parlor game &#8211; which books for a desert island? &#8211; was played by America in earnest.
