No praise is too fulsome for a doughty wind band from Bournemouth or church organist in Beccles, all of whom are favourably compared to their foreign counterparts and their somewhat suspect techniques.  No wonder so many music critics were beside themselves when they discovered the late-blossoming career of the Cambridge-based pianist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/main.jhtml;jsessionid=XTZIYYBLDXPXHQFIQMFCFGGAVCBQYIV0?xml=\/news\/2006\/07\/28\/db2803.xml\">Joyce Hatto<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the past year the British <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Gramophone <\/span>magazine has been one of the most ardent champions of the 100-odd CDs recorded in the last 15 years of her life, after illness had forced her to abandon her concert career; alternately praising her and denouncing her critics in its quaint house style.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gramophone.co.uk\/gramofilereview.asp?reviewID=200215642&#038;mediaID=223394&amp;issue=Reviewed%3A+Gramophone+12%2F2006\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Gramophone<\/span>, December 2006:<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<blockquote><p><b>Hatto takes her place among the greats.  <\/b>Joyce Hatto&#8217;s CD legacy may be mired in controversy (\u201cthe forgeries of jealousy\u201d?) but there is nothing controversial about recordings which surely place her among an elite of women pianists (only six artists of comparable stature spring to mind).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gramophone.co.uk\/gramofilereview.asp?reviewID=200215504&#038;mediaID=223393&amp;issue=Reviewed%3A+Awards+2006\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Gramophone<\/span>, 2006 Awards:<\/a><\/div>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<blockquote><p>Doubting Thomases, of which there are apparently many, may well wonder how Joyce Hatto achieved such unalloyed mastery and musicianship when tragically beset with ill-health. But others will surely celebrate an awe-inspiring triumph of mind over matter, of the indomitable nature of the human spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">But then came 15 February 2007, when <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Gramophone<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gramophone.co.uk\/newsMainTemplate.asp?storyID=2759&#038;newssectionID=1\">published this sad revelation on its website<\/a>:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<blockquote><p>It would take many weeks of intensive work to examine all of the Hatto recordings, but it seems clear that at least some of these great performances are identical to other performances available from other recording companies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Andrew Rose, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pristineaudiodirect.com\/HattoHoax.html\">investigated the hoax<\/a> for Gramophone, the list of CDs by other pianists plagiarised by Hatto (or plagiarised in her name by her record-producer husband) is growing every day, as enthusiasts track down the matching source material. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cranky old men who populate <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/rec.music.classical.recordings\/topics\">rec.music.classical.recordings<\/a> on Usenet have descended into even wilder name-calling than usual, with hilarious use of quotations of previous Hatto praise to deflate some of the more obnoxious resident egos.<\/div>\n<p>More cogent discussions are being tracked at <a href=\"http:\/\/irontongue.blogspot.com\/index.html\">Iron Tongue of Midnight<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Opera Chic offers her typically pertinent observation on the scandal, being <a href=\"http:\/\/operachic.typepad.com\/opera_chic\/2007\/02\/b00tleg_pianist.html\">the first to call out<\/a> Hatto&#8217;s &#8220;Jetsons-style&#8221; bouffant.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the sublime to the ridiculous: the previous post came out of my researching this one.
