A composer whose music is as sensually rewarding as it is intellectually appealing.  A composer who became part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluxus.org\/12345678910.html\">Fluxus<\/a> to annoy the modernist orthdoxy, only to leave it again when he realised Fluxus wanted to be taken seriously.  A man who wrote a symphonic poem for 100 metronomes. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you&#8217;ve seen <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">2001 <\/span>you&#8217;ve heard his music.  Oh alright, and <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Eyes Wide Shut<\/span>.  No, not <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">that <\/span>piece!<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alex Ross gives a beautiful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.therestisnoise.com\/2004\/05\/ligeti_2001.html\">summary of Ligeti&#8217;s life and achievements<\/a>, written in 2001.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnotart.com\/fluxus\/gligeti-poemesymphonique.html\">The score of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Po\u00e8me Symphonique<\/span><\/a>: note the solicitude with which he addresses the problem of how on earth you can get hold of a hundred metronomes.  Unfortunately I can&#8217;t find his vivid description of his preparations for the premiere: sweating backstage in an ill-fitting, rented tuxedo, fingers aching after several hours winding up fifty metronomes, and realising he still had another fifty to go.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Rambler has collected <a href=\"http:\/\/johnsonsrambler.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/13\/ligeti-obituaries\/\">some obituaries<\/a>.  <\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some small downloadable audio samples (and scores) from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schott-cms.com\/nocache\/gyl\/werke\/6,9e58b5f4ae7.html\">his list of works<\/a>.
