Australia is about as far away from Europe as you can get without leaving orbit, and has no representation in most Olympic winter sports.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">British TV has started showing winter Olympics events from Turin without much fanfare on the BBC digital channels. I have heard no speculation in the media about any British medal prospects. Australian network TV has been, based on past experience, heavily promoting its round-the-clock Olympics coverage for weeks in advance. There will be detailed evaluation of Australia&#8217;s slim hopes of fluking another gold medal, which is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icmi.com.au\/speaker.phtml?id=273\">regarded as a genuine achievement<\/a> rather than a humorous anomaly.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The returning Australian atheletes will get a parade. The returning British atheletes will not, but anyone winning a gold medal <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/sport1\/hi\/front_page\/4569422.stm\">will get an MBE<\/a>. Even with an MBE, the British will have lower <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crikey.com.au\/articles\/2006\/02\/08-1538-8793.html\">expectations of being taken seriously<\/a> than the Australians.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The BBC is runing ads explaining to people what a luge is. Australians have known what a luge is for years and spent the past week debating Zoeggeler&#8217;s chances of winning.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, Scottish TV will still skip episodes of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Sopranos<\/span> to show the local curling playoffs instead.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">I hope I&#8217;m starting to sound more like an expatriate but really, I&#8217;m only <a href=\"http:\/\/women.hotolympians.com\/\">in it for the babes<\/a>.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>England is a relatively cold country which gets snowed on regularly.
